Start With Why
Chuck Dudley
Simon Sinek is a writer and speaker as many of you may know. His main mantra is to know your ‘Why’ before you try to understand the ‘What’.
Very simply, determine ‘Why’ you believe, before you get to the ‘What’.
Why do you get up in the morning? Is it to trudge off to work and watch the clock until its quitting time? Or is it to improve your life for your family, to find happiness, or maybe to help people solve their problems?
No matter the answer, I’ve learned that determining my ‘Why’ is a helpful exercise.
Why do I help people with their finances? I believe that everyone has the right to a healthy and prosperous retirement. That can mean a lot of things, and is different for each individual obviously. It depends on your time in life, your ability to have some discipline, and to develop good habits.
Use Early 2016 To Determine Your ‘Why’
Steven Covey has always suggested ‘to start with the end in mind’. Still very good advice for us all.
Perhaps this is the year you need to get your act together, and really begin to plan for your future.
Where do you want to be in 10 years? 15 years? 25 years?
Have you saved enough, or do you need to develop better habits?
Will your family be properly protected from unseen perils?
What might be the risk of running out of money in your retirement?
Does your planning consist of reading the USA Today Green section and listening to TV pundits scream at you with a one size fits all solution?
Guilty of some of these things? Most of us are according to the saving and retirement statistics.
‘Why’ Indeed
There is nothing like turning the page of a calendar from December to January to give one perspective.
It’s the Alpha and Omega of the years, and quite frankly a microcosm of our lives. The years come and go faster and faster, as our relatives predicted they would!!
There is no time to wait. It IS the time for action
Start With Why. Once you know ‘Why’ you can work outwardly and start your real planning.
Over the38, working on 39 years of my career in financial services, learning to start with ‘Why’ was the best discipline I’ve discovered.
Maybe it will help you too.
As always, I’m always ready to help you discover your Why.
