Women today shape our workplaces, strengthen our communities, and inspire future generations. They lead with vision, mentor with compassion, and dedicate time and energy to causes that make a difference. Yet their journey is not without challenges. Women often balance professional responsibilities with caregiving at home, and many still face unique financial hurdles when it comes to long-term security.
As Argent celebrates American Business Women’s Day and the women who make a lasting impact in their careers and communities, we also pause to recognize the importance of supporting women in every stage of life – professionally, personally, and financially.
Three themes highlight the extraordinary impact of women and remind us why continued support is essential: leadership, mentorship, and community service. Alongside these contributions, it is also important to acknowledge the financial realities that women face and the tools available to help them succeed.
Women Lead with Vision and Resilience
Across industries, women are stepping into leadership roles; they drive innovation, shape strategy, and model resilience in times of change. Their ability to lead with empathy and collaboration is helping organizations thrive in today’s fast-paced environment.
But leadership is not confined to corner offices or boardrooms. It is demonstrated every day in how women inspire colleagues, create inclusive teams, and guide their organizations toward growth. Their leadership styles, often a balance of strength, adaptability, and vision, set them apart and paves the way for others to follow.
Women Mentor, Teach, and Support Others
A hallmark of women in the workforce is their commitment to lifting others. Whether through formal mentoring programs or informal encouragement, women share knowledge and open doors for those coming behind them.
I saw this firsthand through my own mother. As a manager in a largely female office, she rose to senior leadership while balancing the responsibilities of family and community. Along the way, she mentored and championed countless women, helping them navigate challenges and move forward in their careers. Her example showed that mentorship isn’t only about offering professional advice – it’s about believing in others and making space for them to succeed.
These mentoring roles are natural extensions of the skills women use every day in their families and communities through listening, guiding, supporting, and encouraging. The ripple effects are powerful. When women support one another, entire organizations become stronger, and the next generation of leaders is better prepared for success.
Women Strengthen Communities through Service
Beyond their careers and family responsibilities, women give generously to their communities. They volunteer, lead nonprofit boards, organize local events, and advocate for causes that matter. These efforts build stronger, healthier, and more connected communities.
The numbers tell the story. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 70% of women participate in the workforce, and 75% of those work full-time. Yet even with these demanding schedules, women still find ways to give back. In fact, women with children volunteer at the highest rates, an extraordinary reminder of how much they invest in strengthening the world around them.
Often, this commitment happens alongside already full calendars. Women step into the gap where needs exist, improving quality of life for others in visible and lasting ways. Communities across the country are better because of their service.
The Unique Challenges Women Face
While women lead, mentor, and serve with excellence, they also face unique challenges in the workforce. Many step away from their careers – temporarily or long-term – to care for children, aging parents, or other family members. These caregiving responsibilities, while invaluable, can reduce lifetime earnings and make it harder to build retirement savings.
The numbers highlight the impact. According to the World Health Organization, women live on average about six years longer than men. Yet studies also show that women typically retire with about 30% less in savings. The reasons are complex – lower lifetime earnings, time out of the workforce, caregiving responsibilities – but the result is clear: women must stretch fewer resources over more years.
For this reason, financial planning is especially important. Women can take proactive steps to build financial security and strengthen their long-term futures:
- Start saving early in your career. Even small contributions made consistently can grow significantly over time through the power of compounding.
- Understand your employer benefits. Take full advantage of retirement plans such as a 401(k) or pension and ensure you are contributing enough to capture any available employer match.
- Use catch-up provisions. For those later in their professional journey, the SECURE 2.0 Act expanded opportunities for additional contributions to boost retirement readiness.
- Take an active role in family financial decisions. Whether budgeting, investing, or estate planning, women who engage directly in their household’s financial matters help safeguard their families and build confidence for the future.
- Think like the CEO of your family’s future. By leading with vision and intention, you can align today’s financial decisions with tomorrow’s goals and create a plan that supports generations to come.
Proactive planning helps ensure women can thrive financially, even while balancing multiple roles in their careers, families, and communities.
