After a shocking, surreal week – the accident, the funeral, a thousand hugs – the house is finally quiet.
The twins are asleep. My parents and extended family have returned home.
Sarah, exhausted but unable to sleep, mindlessly opens the refrigerator. Seeing a mountain of leftovers, she shuts the door and stares blankly at the artwork on the front.
“Ding…ding…ding.”
Three rapid-fire text messages:
Can I come get the girls…
Tomorrow I mean…
While u meet with your advisor
Oh! Sarah’s heart begins to race.
My financial advisor meeting is tomorrow!
Instantly, a wave of dread and a whirlwind of questions.
What’s he gonna tell me? Will I have to sell the house? How soon am I gonna need to get a job? Did Tom have life insurance or investments he didn’t tell me about? Why don’t I know more about our financial affairs – other than how much is in our checking and savings accounts, and the fact that he earned a really good salary
A hundred miles east, Marcus, 21, and Emma, 18, face a different challenge. Their mother’s sudden passing has left them with substantial funds held in Trust — and absolutely no idea how to manage all that wealth. Should they invest it? Use it to study abroad or go to grad school? What?
Meanwhile, in east Texas, 63-year-old Bob has one all-consuming thought: retirement! He’s in the process of selling his successful plumbing business and is adamant about keeping $250,000 of the proceeds in a low-interest savings account at his bank. Other advisors kept trying to talk him out of keeping so much ‘in cash.’ They told Bob to put that money in the markets where it can grow. But Bob won’t budge. And he doesn’t much appreciate “these young whippersnappers trying to pressure me.”
What do Sarah, Marcus, Emma, and Bob have in common?
They want financial security. They want to be financially independent.
The Desire for Financial Independence
“I meet clients like Sarah more often than you might think,” shares Karen Saunders, market president at Argent Trust Company in San Antonio.
“These are smart, competent women who find themselves having to make complex financial decisions while dealing with a devastating loss. They do sometimes come to us believing they might be destitute, only to discover they have significant resources. It’s our job to show them how to access and manage those assets.”
“I can tell you this: when you’re sitting with a 20-year-old who has lost a parent and they’ve received an inheritance or life insurance proceeds, you realize the immense responsibility you have,” explains Jodi Penn Rives, Business Development Officer at Argent Financial in Shreveport
“These young adults are suddenly thrust into making important decisions, not just for themselves but often for their siblings too. It’s our job to help them quickly understand both the opportunities and responsibilities that come with inherited wealth.”
“Bob’s been fun to work with,” says Kenny Brown Jr., President of Argent Trust Oklahoma in Tulsa. “Other advisors kept trying to talk him out of keeping so much cash in the bank. And that bothered him because, for him, having an ample amount of accessible cash is important. It gives him a sense of security and control. So, instead of pushing Bob to change his mind, we presented him with all his options, gave him our recommendation, then accepted and affirmed his decision.
“He appreciated that we took time to explain our recommendations and rationale while respecting his choices. His story is a good reminder that financial planning isn’t merely about the math — it’s also about clients feeling heard and being empowered to make informed decisions on their terms.”
These three client stories share a common thread: Smart, capable people finding themselves in new situations where they may have multiple options but limited financial knowledge. That’s a gap that can create real anxiety:
- The fear of making wrong and irreversible financial mistakes while grieving
- The stress of not fully understanding all your options when others are dependent on you
- The concern about maintaining long-term security for your children
- The pressure of being responsible for stewarding one’s wealth wisely
- The uncertainty about who to trust with your family’s future
A Different Kind of Financial Guidance
This is where Argent Financial Group prides itself on our “You, First” approach. Unlike many financial advisors who focus primarily on investment returns, Argent’s advisors serve as comprehensive financial guides. (Someone recently noted our advisors often seem more like concierges than conventional money managers.)
“We work diligently to make sure people feel seen and heard,” explains Jodi Penn Rives. “We want our clients to understand all their options. And we see to it that their goals are front and center — not our goals, but their goals. “I’ve lost a spouse, so I know that helping someone in that situation, or a person who’s inherited wealth unexpectedly, involves so much more than just helping them manage money. It’s also about helping them learn to navigate a new and sometimes scary life situation.”
“I always make it a point to invite spouses, particularly wives, to financial planning meetings,” adds Vicki Heroy, Vice President and Trust Officer, Shreveport. “I want them to know that I’m a partner and advocate for them. And they never need to feel inferior if they don’t know certain things. I tell them, ‘There are no silly questions.’ I work to make sure they’re in the know, and I keep them in the loop. That education and relationship is invaluable if or when tragedy strikes.”
How We Help Clients Find More Security and Take Steps Toward Financial Independence
In our work with clients, we follow a simple framework…
- Listen First: We start by understanding each one’s unique concerns and goals. “Every client situation is different,” notes Kenny Brown, Jr. “Some want to preserve wealth for future generations. Others want to focus on charitable giving. We respect those different objectives.”
- Educate Always: Our commitment is to provide clear, judgment-free financial education tailored to each client’s needs. “Education is everything,” says Vicki Heroy. “Whether you’re a young widow, a recent heir, or planning for retirement, understanding your options is crucial.”
- Build Your Team: We coordinate with CPAs, attorneys, and other professionals to create a comprehensive support system for each client. “We’re not just investment managers,” notes Karen Saunders. “We routinely help clients with everything from navigating property taxes to accessing medical resources, from evaluating real estate investments to making decisions about studying abroad.”
- Navigate Together: From financial decisions that need to be made right away to long-term planning, we guide clients every step of the way.
The Stakes Are High
Without proper guidance, even substantial wealth can be mismanaged, family harmony can be disrupted, and opportunities for growth can be missed.
With Argent as your partner, you can gain:
- More confidence in your financial decisions
- More peace of mind about your family’s future
- A clearer understanding of your options
- A trusted advisor who respects your choices
- A comprehensive team that supports your goals
“I’ve seen what happens when people try to navigate these waters alone,” shares Karen Saunders. “The difference proper guidance makes isn’t just financial — it’s emotional. It’s about having someone in your corner who understands both the technical aspects and the human side of wealth management.”
